Photography

My photography has appeared in magazines, books, newspapers, brochures, posters, displays and advertising material.

I am based in Tasmania and have a unique portfolio of images from this state as well as from across the temperate waters of southern Australia. I have also traveled widely to photograph the marine environment, and have extensive collections of images from the east coast of mainland Australia, the Coral Sea and Great Barrier Reef, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and British Columbia.

This site provides a just small sample of my work. These and other high quality images are available for use.

How to Find an Image

The images on this site represent a very small part of my collection. If you do not see what you want, please phone or email and describe the sort of image you would like and I can provide samples for inspection.

Low resolution JPG images can be sent via email or placed on a web page. After you have found a suitable image, terms and a fee for use for use can be negotiated.

Scans of images from 35 mm originals are normally made using a Canon FS-4000 film scanner to 4000 dpi/24 bit, and are provided as PSD, TIF or JPG files on CD. Other scanning options are available, or I can send duplicate 35 mm slides.

Digital images are captured (using Nikon cameras) as RAW (NEF) files, processed using Adobe Photoshop CS3/ACR, and filed using Adobe Bridge. These can be provided on CD to required size and file specifications.

If file size limits permit and time is short, images can also be sent by email.

High quality photographic prints, suitable for framing, are now available. See the page on Fine Art Prints for more information.

Rates

Fees for use of images are based on Australian Journalist Association rates, but depend to a large extent on the image and the intended use. For example, an image of diver swimming with a dolphin used in an advertising campaign is going to cost more that a simple picture of a sea star used in newsletter for a nonprofit organisation.

Package deals for the use of multiple images for a project can be arranged. For instance, using the example above, a picture of a sea star could be included at a nominal rate if a more expensive image of a dolphins was also used.

I welcome the opportunity to provide an obligation free quote.

Your invoice will have details of use/price written on it and payment can be made by cheque, Paypal or electronic funds transfere.

Technology

Digital images are captured on my digital cameras as RAW (NEF or CR2) files, processed using Adobe Photoshop/ACR, and filed using Adobe Bridge. These can be provided as PSD, TIF or JPG files to client specifications, and can be sent on CD or via the internet.

While I currently use digital cameras, quite a few images on this site have actually been scanned from 35 mm transparency film (mostly Fujichrome 100 or 50 ISO Velvia, or 100 ISO Provia and Sensia).

Scans of images from 35 mm originals are normally made using a Canon FS-4000 film scanner to 4000 dpi/24bit, and again are normally provided as PSD, TIF or JPG files. Other scanning options are available.

Many of my images were created before digital photography became a practical proposition over a period of more than 20 years using a variety of Nikon camera bodies, including F2, F3, F90x, FM2, and Nikonos 4/5. For underwater photography, the F2 was used in a plastic Ikelite housing (until it imploded at depth) while the F3 and F90x survived in aluminium housings made by Aquatica.

I have been scanning and using digital images for publication since the mid 1990's, but was a relatively recent convert to digital photography due to the poor image quality provided by earlier digital cameras.

The introduction of digital cameras such as the Nikon D2x a few years ago finally convinced me that the advantages of shooting digitally could be combined with image quality that was at least equivalent to 35 mm film. I now use digital cameras (mainly Nikon DSLRS: D7200, D800 and D850) and protect them in Aquatica housings. These camera systems can provide image quality that is equal or better than most scanned 35 mm slide film, and of course digital photography provides additional advantages such as convenience, economy and rapid feedback.

I use Ikelite flash units (SS50, SS150, SS400, SS200, DS200 and DS 160) to provide lighting where necessary.

As far as diving equipment goes, most underwater images have been made using normal scuba equipment, but I have also done a lot of freediving, especially with marine mammals. I have also used a Megalodon closed circuit rebreather to look for  interesting photo opportunities in deeper water. With two other divers I did the first dive to 100 m off Tasmania's east  coast.
